MTEL has been designed by experienced Ontario co-op educators who have years of experience working within the Ministry of Education guidelines to create and manage Cooperative Education programs in boards across Ontario, both as co-op teachers and as their board’s Co-op lead.
The application is carefully designed to help board leads manage their Experiential Learning programs efficiently.
Save time: All processes, procedures, reports have been developed by experienced co-op teachers with the goal of minimizing administration time. Teachers and board leads can focus on what is most important: doing placement health & safety assessments, visiting students at their placement, finding employers, preparing board reports, etc.
Standardization of practices: Standardization and consistency of co-op management means everyone is working with common tools, including the electronic WEA, the student Learning Plan and many routine co-op forms and reports.
Ministry Compliant: The application and its tools will soon be aligned with the Ministry of Education’s Curriculum Document for Cooperative Education (2018). and also comply with the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities guidelines for the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP).

Resource Databases: Quickly search the Ontario Curriculum Database, National Occupation Classification (NOC) database, and the Apprenticeship Trades Information database. These three databases are key to developing the student’s record and Learning Plan quickly and efficiently. All three databases are regularly updated, so that teachers have access to current information. The Apprenticeship Trades Information database is based on the information available on the Ontario College of Trades website; it is updated regularly.

Training Is Included: Subscription cost includes hands-on training for your school board’s experiential learning coordinator and for your board experiential learning teachers.
Handy User Guide: An electronic Teacher Manual as well as an electronic Board Coordinator Manual are included in the resources section of the application. Both manuals are regularly updated and kept current.
User Support: Quality user support is provided by MTEL support staff, either through the board coordinator or directly to teachers, following school board policy (email address: firstname.lastname@example.org). Support can also come from the community of school boards using the MTEL application.
Working together in the MTEL Provincial Committee, MTEL-user school boards from both the public and catholic school systems have helped design the way the application works and guide its evolution into an increasingly robust, easy-to-use and practical tool for teachers and coordinators.
Based on feedback solicited from teachers and coordinators, refinements and updates are implemented throughout the year, while major functional upgrades are deployed annually, usually over the summer.
Each user board sits on the MTEL Provincial Committee, where their input is sought in ongoing development. The committee also helps build networking amongst co-op educators working for the benefit of students and teachers.
